A Chardonnay No-Brainer
Depending on who you ask, the list of truly classic California Chardonnays can be counted on just one hand—never more than two. But no matter who’s counting, Wine & Spirits Top 100 winery Dutton-Goldfield makes the cut.
The Dutton Ranch Chardonnay is Dutton-Goldfield’s flagship bottling, a California Grand Cru, grown from among the most coveted sites in the Russian River Valley. Wine Enthusiast called today’s 2018 Dutton Ranch “lively, fresh and focused,” with “a pleasing energy and minerality,” tacking 93 points onto one of the most sought-after and competitively priced Chardonnays on the market.
Value is where Dutton-Goldfield has a leg up on fellow California standard-bearers like Kistler, Ramey, and Kosta Browne. The six-generation Dutton family has owned its land for so long, they can afford to offer wines at a price below the high-end norm.
Winemaker Dan Goldfield’s not-so-secret weapons behind this iconic Chardonnay are prized grapes from several Green Valley sub-AVA sites—including Mill Station, Sullivan, and Walker Hill—that Wine Enthusiast called “stellar.” These old-vine vineyards contribute beautiful acidity to the wine, which gives this creamy, full-bodied, and opulent Chardonnay its energy. The Z Clone block near the old Dutton shop in Green Valley rounds out the blend for this classic, rich California bottling, adding aromas of ripe pear and a creamy, polished mouthfeel.
From top to bottom, the 2018 is a breathtaking cross-section of the Russian River Valley that demonstrates exactly why Robert Parker called the Dutton family “among the most highly respected grape growers in Northern California.”
The Dutton Ranch was founded in 1964, and today’s iteration of Dutton-Goldfield was born over 20 years ago, when longtime friends Steve Dutton and Dan Goldfield launched a label to honor their home appellation. The 2018 Dutton Ranch Chardonnay captures the essence of the foggy, picturesque Russian River Valley, delivering its very best at a price that is simply astounding.
