Bill Bought a Home. He Got a Zin Treasure.

The oldest vineyard in the Coombsville AVA doesn’t grow Cabernet Sauvignon for $150+ bottles, nor is it planted to Merlot or Cabernet Franc. The most historic and revered site in this southeastern corner of Napa Valley is the 116-year-old R.W. Moore Vineyard, which produces some of the greatest Zinfandel in California.

The site is so good that Zinfandel legend Larry Turley turned it into one of the most iconic bottles of all time: the Turley Moore Earthquake Vineyard Zin. Today, only two wineries make a single-vineyard wine from this site: high-end Zin specialist Robert Biale, and Mike and Molly Hendry.

Mike Hendry is a member of the iconic Hendry family behind numerous Wine Access favorites. His wife Molly is the niece of Bill Moore, the vineyard owner. That makes it difficult to conceive of a bottle more primed for greatness than this one.

Showing a deep ruby color and thick tears, the wine bursts with aromas of dark strawberry, blackberry, crushed raspberry, blueberry compote, and plum. There is a beautiful purity to the fruit, which offers the lifted scents that mark great Zinfandel. With a plush, round mouthfeel and persistent waves of acidity, it’s teeming with old-vine Zin intensity all the way through the long, spiced finish.

Moore Vineyard’s vines are ancient, the site is thick with volcanic ash, and the growing season is long, thanks to the San Pablo Bay fog. In fact, the Zin vines—which are barely tall enough to brush your knees—have been trained to lie low to absorb the earth’s radiant heat. Harnessing that incredible terroir, Mike and Molly’s bottling packs as much pedigree as any Zinfandel in California.
