We Had to Have It All
Working the floors of St. Helena’s MICHELIN 3-Star Restaurant at Meadowood and Napa’s Kenzo, you get to know a lot of people—among them winegrowers.
That’s how sommelier-winemaker Brian Kulich’s 2018 Wise Decision The Blend came to be. Working the Rolodex he built by shaking hands with some of the most eminent vintners in Napa Valley, he tracked down the raw materials for this blockbuster red blend, a wine that reminds us—in style and in story—of The Prisoner.
Check out these sources: The Cabernet hails from the very center of Rutherford. The Syrah comes from Rodgers Creek, a go-to for legends like David Ramey. 60-year old Carignane vines from Redwood Valley round out the blend, topped with Beaucastel-clone Grenache from Mendocino.
Eduardo has known Brian for years, since the days they both ran restaurant beverage programs here in the Napa Valley. A few years ago they caught up over lunch at Bouchon Bistro in Yountville, where Brian mentioned launching his own wine brand. “I have to keep most of this quiet,” he said, pausing to take a sip of Cab, “but I have some INCREDIBLE potential sources and wines coming.” Needless to day, Eduardo was intrigued.
The wine is a quadruple-AVA blend that works like magic, thanks to Brian’s sommelier palate and blending chops. Made from 36% Syrah, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Carignane, 11% Petite Sirah, and 9% Grenache, its aromas of dark plum and sun-kissed blackberry are followed by layers of lilac and a spice box of lavender seed, Darjeeling tea, and black pepper. The palate is lush and juicy, with plenty of black fruit—a slam-dunk for the grill or rib night!
