Three Transcendent Rhône Wines

2019 E. Guigal La Landonne Cote-Rotie Rhone

The La Landonne plot, planted in the 1970s, is situated on one of the steepest vineyards of Côte-Rôtie’s Côte Brune. It puts forth a wine with full power and dark, brooding fruit, and the 2019 earned 98–100 points from Jeb Dunnuck, who called it “pure brilliance in Syrah.” Wine Advocate gave it the same high marks, calling it “the essence of this fabled lieu-dit.”

2019 E. Guigal La Mouline Cote-Rotie Rhone

The only one of the “La Las” grown on Côte-Rôtie’s Côte Blonde, La Mouline hails from a vineyard planted by the Romans 2,500 years ago. The inaugural bottling ignited a quality revolution in the Rhône in the 1960s, and the 2019 carries that tradition with pride. It garnered 97–100 points from Dunnuck, who praised the big, rich wine’s “kaleidoscope-like bouquet of bloody black and blue fruits, tapenade, salted meat, woodsmoke, and a touch of violets.”

2019 E. Guigal La Turque Cote-Rotie Rhone

Guigal’s 2019 La Turque is a regal expression of Côte-Rôtie. It blew away Wine Advocate and Dunnuck to the tune of 98–100 points, and the former was unreserved in their praise: “The extroverted 2019 Cote Rotie La Turque is about as impressive a young wine as I've tasted at Guigal.”
