Obsession-Worthy Santa Barbara Intensity

Joey Tensley, who's earned his critical-darling status through off-the-charts quality and rock-steady consistency, is a master of Central Coast Rhône wines. He makes what Jeb Dunnuck calls “some of the greatest wines out there” for the money.

Since our first Tensley offer in 2009, his wines have become an obsession at Wine Access, crushing member-ratings and delivering intensity and high-toned vibrancy—and the 2020 might be one of Tensley’s best All Blocks Estate Blends of all time. Jeb Dunnuck, who gave it an early score of 93–95 points, called it a “big, up-front” wine—a Châteauneuf-style red that’s going to “deliver the goods right out of the gate. “

Tensley's Rhône-style wines have garnered the kind of praise from Wine Advocate that makes collectors brace for stratospheric prices. He's "flirted with perfection" with "high-end, super-duper wines" that commonly land mid-90s scores—and he’s done it without rocketing through the three-digit price point that now seems run of the mill for such overperforming California wines.

The All Blocks Estate is one of his signature reds. It hails from his eponymous Tensley Vineyard, which sits on the Los Olivos property that he and his wife Jennifer call home, and Colson Canyon, the site from which he produces high-scoring wines that run for about double the price.

The 2020 All Blocks is a Southern Rhône–style blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre from these two stellar sites. Rich, ruby-purple, and overflowing with black and blue fruit underpinned by charcuterie, lavender, and freshly ground pepper, it’s robust, concentrated, and supple—the work of a true master.
