They Had One Job—and Did It Spectacularly

James Suckling’s staff tasted nearly 25,000 wines last year, and they named Pewsey Vale’s superb, bone-dry Riesling the top value of the whole lot, awarding it 96 points.

We love this wine for the same reason Suckling does: This is remarkably serious, ageworthy, dry Riesling.

Even collectors who swear by the aristocratic Old World dry Rieslings of Alsace and Austria are known to keep this mineral-drenched Down Under classic well stocked in their cellars, marveling at how it develops over the years.

Great winemaking is about focus, and Pewsey Vale has spent 174 years dialed in on making exceptional, mineral-filled, bone-dry Riesling.

It’s a level of obsession that few wineries in the world bring to just one grape, and it’s why Wine Advocate said that Pewsey Vale, the region’s earliest pioneer, “remains Eden Valley’s premier name in Riesling.”

There’s a strong argument for calling Riesling Australia’s signature white grape. It’s widely available there, and it has a distinct style that separates it from other iterations around the world. We love the country’s brilliantly fresh, dry versions, and some of the best come from the blustery hillsides of Eden Valley, which Wine Enthusiast called a “quality benchmark” for the variety.

No winery represents the region better than Pewsey Vale. Wine writers have been declaring its Rieslings among the best in the world since 1854. It’s largely thanks to the stellar terroir. At 1640 feet of elevation, the gently rolling hills are bathed in golden sunlight yet cooled by mountain winds. Vines struggle in shallow, rocky soils to bring forth Rieslings with concentrated, intense flavor.

This is the mother lode—the quintessential expression of Riesling from one of Australia’s most revered wineries.
