When Andrea Costanti took over the family business from his Uncle Emilio in 1983, he had big shoes to fill -- the Costantis have been one of the premier wine families in Montalcino since the 1500s. Costanti proved more than up to the challenge, however, and today, produces complex, aromatic Brunellos, plus the Super Tuscan Vermiglio. The estate, outside of Montalcino, covers 25 hectares, 12 of which are planted with vines. Two vineyards combine their characteristics to produce elegant, structured Brunellos with enticing floral lift to their focused red fruit flavors. The high altitude, Colle al Matrichese plot, is especially known for providing aromatic complexity and fine-grained tannins to the wines. In addition to the Brunellos, look for a regular and reserve grappa bottling, made from Sangiovese pomace.
