In 27 years at Beringer, Tor Kenward learned a lot, and met a lot of people. He learned so much that upon his retirement in 2001, he decided to open his own cellar, TOR Kenward Family Wines. But of all the people he met along the way, Kenward credits Beringer's iconic winemaker, Ed Sbragia, with teaching him the pecking order of Napa Valley vineyards. Since founding this small brand and teaming up with winemaker Jeff Ames, Kenward has parlayed Sbragia's advice into contracts with some of the top vineyards in Napa: from Andy Beckstoffer's To-Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon to Lee Hudson's Syrah. The result is a collection of rich, beautifully refined reds that speak unmistakably of the place from which the grapes are drawn and Ames's deft winemaking touch. We're especially high on Tor's Howell Mountain Cimarossa Cabernet.
