Dunn Vineyards is a family operation, started in 1978 by Randy and Lori Dunn. Over the years, family participation as well as production has grown. From 14 acres on Howell Mountain, the estate now consists of over 200 acres, although only 30 are under vine. Randy and Lori's kids, Michael and Kristina, now take part in the family business as well. Michael is cellar master and assistant winemaker. The Dunns are known for chewy, tannic, uncompromising Cabernet Sauvignons of outstanding depth. Only two labels are produced, both from 100% Cabernet: the estate grown, Howell Mountain Cabernet, and a Napa Valley bottling, made with fruit from the valley floor as well as some fruit from the estate vineyards. The Napa Valley is typically a bit less forbidding in its youth than the Howell Mountain release, but both are powerful black fruit-dominated Cabernets that need a minimum of seven or eight years of cellaring -- and often considerably longer.
