The Grand Puy which gives Château Grand Puy Lacoste its name refers to the gravelly hill in northern Pauillac where the estate lies. This terroir is ideal for Cabernet, giving the vines the opportunity to take root deep in the well-draining soil. The result is a concentrated, polished wine, showing classic Pauillac notes of dark berries, plum, spices, and earth.
The 55 hectare vineyard is planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot. Despite being classified in 1855 as a Fifth growth, Grand Puy Lacoste consistently outperforms its rank, due largely to the Cabernet which provides a solid structure to the wine. Francois Xavier Borie, who inherited the estate from his father, currently oversees the production of 12,000 cases annually. His family, who purchased the estate in 1972, has largely been responsible for the revitalisation of the grounds and the wine.
