Château Montrose,"Long regarded as possessing one of the finest terroirs in the Bordeaux region, right in the heart of the Saint-Estephe appellation, Château Montrose has been on fire since vintage 1989, and especially since 2000, rivaling the First Growths for complexity and palate presence. Prior to its sale to the Bouygues brothers in 2006, Montrose had been owned by the Charmoule family for over 100 years and by the legendary Segur family before that.
Château Montrose sits on 95 hectares of gravel and black sand with a subsoil of clay and marl. A short ways away lies the Gironde estuary which helps stabilize the climate. Sloping vineyards are planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. While older vintages were characterized for their harsh tannins, today's tannins are more supple than ever before. However, this rather muscular, densely packed wine drinks best after at least 10 years in the cellar. In addition to the eponymous Grand Vin, the second wine of the Château is La Dame de Montrose.
