Napa Valley 1978

1978 was an excellent year in Napa, producing solid, concentrated Cabernets that helped to solidify Napa’s position on the world stage during the valley’s modern renaissance.

The unusually wet spring caused some concerns, but those evaporated with improved, warmer weather, which allowed for even ripening until a hot spell just before the harvest. The heat sent sugars racing and threatened over-ripeness and loss of acidity, so growers rushed to bring in the fruit. Disaster was avoided in most cases and many growers brought in a large crop, which was welcome after the two preceding drought years. An excellent year, yielding big, solid, age-worthy Cabernets.
