The Melville Vineyard in Santa Rita Hills is my favorite region in California for Syrah's and Pinot Noirs. Ojai is consistently the best value and quality in Syrah's for my tastes.
Pnp at 60*, then decanted after sampling, kept cool. Initially prevalent plum and blackberry fruit, especially on the nose, fairly bright acidity. With 2 hours time, minerality significant and smoke and cinnamon shone through, faint cacao. While a serious Ojai fan, I wonder how this bottle would rate blind. Mellville is not my favorite Syrah offering, but even with a clear head I would have called out the somewhat strong, borderline harsh, rustic tannins, which maintained their presence as the night worse on, plus a profile shift to more grey smoke and graphite with fruit waning a bit. Would sit this player on the sideline for a couple more years to see if it mellows. 90
