Napa Valley 1991

1991 yielded a good-sized crop of ripe, complex wines. It was a long, cool growing season, which pushed harvest dates back to some of the latest on record. Ample rain before bud break replenished water supplies for the vines. Weather was fine during bloom and a large crop was set. Plenty of thinning and selection occurred to keep the vines balanced, and it was one of the keys to success. A little heat in July gave the vines a little push, and it was warm again at the end of the harvest. The grapes had plenty of hang-time to attain optimal maturity and physiological ripeness, with balanced sugars and acids, and ample but ripe tannic structures. Overall, an excellent vintage.
