Oh my........

I just had this at a vertical Beaucastel dinner at the Wine Merchant of Raleigh and I was blown away by the complexity and finesse this wine has! We had it next to 1993, 1990, 1988, 1981, and few others. This wine could be as complete as the 1990!

Epiphanous

Any oenophile can remember the moment they stopped being a wine drinker and became a wine lover. For me it was the first glass of the 98 CDP almost a year ago. My favorite local merchant offered it for $50 a bottle, which at the time was the most I'd ever paid...on a tipsy whim, I must add. Of course they were sold out the next time I could justify spending so much, and I've been unable to find it for half again as much.

Lovely

This is perhaps one the most perfect wines that I have ever had in my life. Lovely.

Another Supreme Wine from the Perrins

An absolute winner. 40% Grenache, 20% mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise with the balance from the rest of the authorized varietals. Huge, rich with blackberry, smoke and licorice flavors throughout. The best since 90. However the Perrin brothers made this one to age, it will be much better in probably 5-10 years. This is one that will go VERY fast, so pick some up now!!!

(potentially *****)

My first thought was "what's that smell?" Somebody must have let some rotten grapes get into the fermenter. It was a heavy, steamy rot smell, less the sulfuric smell of bottle-sickness. After a few minutes the odor gained definition and assumed the characteristics of heavy, soggy, vanilla-tinged oak, dualed with raspberry syrup and cumin elements. Overall the aromas were intense to say the least. The flavors were far from poised; there was an overall blur to the palate. There was heavy, concentrated fruit, some cocoa and sweet spice and an incredibly thick texture. I suspect the oak will eventually be soaked up and the wine will tell more of a story. Impressive anyway. Tasted 10-21-2000. 94 points.

Went downhill fast

Don't know what happened, but recent tastings of the wine that I used to like so much have been disappointing. All complexity and freshness is gone, pruney and oxidized aromas have taken over. Seems this is well beyond its peak. What a pity.
