When I try the 1989 I also served a 1989 white and i requested that the guest saves some of the Blanc 1989 to try with the cheese course. They loved it! This is not to suggest that the rouge 1989 wasn't also standing its own ground. The color of the wine is an intense ruby red that is present almost to the rim. The nose is well balanced with soft fruits and a hint of herbs and tobacco. The tannins are polished, but still quite young. It is certainly an unctuous and complex wine. It is a wine that can be enjoyed now, but if left to age it may become one of the best Haut Brion I ever experienced .

1989 Bordeaux — An Age-Worthy Vintage

1989 was the second in a trio of very successful vintages in Bordeaux, a year known for opulent, concentrated, and powerfully rich wines. Over the years, the ‘89s have stood the test of time. The best are showing no signs of decline today.

A mild winter kicked off the growing season in 1989, and was followed by a warm spring and very early flowering — up to three weeks ahead of schedule in some places. Conditions were excellent and the stage was set for a large and early harvest. Temperatures from June through August were the highest on record since the 1940s, and the resulting harvest was the earliest in almost 100 years. The grapes were ripe, sweet, and concentrated, and the wines show it in their dense, powerful fruit and concentration. Pomerol was one of the standout regions, producing one of the best vintages of the century. The northern Médoc was excellent as well, and while Graves was not quite as successful overall, Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion were two of the top wines of the year.
