Something Here for Everyone
Diversity is what any wine lover is up against every single holiday season. Yes, familial diversity—like 49er fans vs. Buffalo Bills fans, tennis know-it-alls vs. golf die-hards—but we mean diversity on the dinner table.
Most holiday meals present a host of complications to us Dionysian enthusiasts: there’s the artichoke dip that one aunt always makes, and it has to be served next to the latkes, the ham, and the turkey—all at the same meal, with the white bread and wheat rolls, the cornbread, the stuffing, the sausages, the fish, and whatever else.
Now, we’re really picky about the wines we choose to open—call it obsessed with nailing the right food pairing. But maybe you’re not? Maybe you might want a Sauvignon Blanc with your steak, or a Napa Cabernet with your chicken. Or a Tuscan red with your artichoke dip, and a Chateauneuf with that Dover Sole. Diversity?
Enter this 12-bottle truly diverse Holiday Set that what we're calling a "10 + 2"—you essentially pay for 10 bottles and get 2 bonus ones. Because these are wines from around the world, we look at this set as different terroirs for a diverse set of entrees. The bonus bottles—two Louis Latour Vire Clesse whites—are just for you, so go heavy on the pours for yourself.
2017 Domaine du Petit Clocher Sauvignon Blanc x2
The fourth-generation estate, whose wines have appeared on Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Best Buys list, is known for its award-winning Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Franc. But their Sauvignon Blanc—planted on a whim, and representing just five percent of their vineyard holdings—has become one of their biggest hits. Tangy aromas of lemon, green apple, and under ripe peach underpinned by mineral highlights. Bright on the palate, bursting with citrus fruits and mouth-watering acidity. The finish is crisp, clean and refreshing.
2015 Louis Latour Vire Clesse Les Champs x2
The monks of Cluny first planted the limestone hillsides of Viré-Clessé 900 years ago. As Bernard Retornaz, Louis-Fabrice Latour’s right-hand man, says, “Had the monks witnessed a vintage like 2015, the men of the cloth would have become full-time vignerons!” He wasn’t lying. The 2015 vintage turned out a brilliant Chardonnay, rich, juicy, and weighty, with all of the hot-vintage opulence braced by stinging acid backbone. Leading the way amongst value-driven white Burgundies.
2016 Tensley Syrah Colson Canyon Santa Barbara x2
Tensley unctuous, decadent Santa Barbara reds have been favorites of ours for as long as we can recall. Even Robert Parker’s longtime Rhône expert, Jeb Dunnuck gushed over this bottle’s “sensational purity,” concluding it is “a killer wine,” deserving of 94-96 points. Terrific aromas of blackberries, Madagascar vanilla bean, and black plum skins. Bold, explosive and rich on the palate with a tapestry of black fruit mingling with black peppercorns, dried violets, cured meat and an olive tapenade note on the finish. Everything is beautifully in balance and driven with power and energy.
2013 Castellani Fattoria di Travalda Toscana IGT x2
Wine Enthusiast has asserted that, under Piergiorgio Castellani’s guidance, the family is “jockeying for a position as one of the top producers of Italy.” Travalda is an homage to the Super Tuscan tradition, blending classic Bordeaux varieties, aged in barrique for 18 months, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The result is a powerful red, exuding grace with elegant red florals and red berry fruit balanced by silky tannins.
2016 Domaine de Cristia Châteauneuf du Pape x2
Critics are crowning Baptiste Grangeon as a new champion in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Robert Parker says that “the Grangeons have been on fire qualitatively for the last five to six years.” Opaque ruby purple color. Ripe nose redolent of ripe red cherry and strawberry fruit, tinged with garrigue, baked earth, and a hint of smoke. A rich mouthfeel with ripe, chewy tannins and a subtle hint of oak on the palate and warm fruit on the finish.
2013 Jones Family Sisters Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley x2
Working closely over the years with famed growers David Abreu and Jim Barbour, 25x 100-point winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown has helped launch wineries into the cult wine stratosphere. But via Brown and Barbour’s collaboration with Jones Family Vineyards of Calistoga, this 2013 Jones “The Sisters” Cabernet Sauvignon delivers Thomas Rivers Brown cult wine quality for a fraction of the price of his other clients’ bottlings. 93 points from James Suckling who called it “very pretty and complex“ while Antonio Galloni praised its “rich, juicy and accessible,” profile, “red cherry, pomegranate, blood orange, rose petal and mint,” notes, which “captures the energy of the vintage in spades.”
