Perfectly Aged Pomerol Ready to Enjoy
For nearly a decade—from the time he tasted it out of barrel to the last time he rated it, in 2010—Robert Parker sang the praises of the 2000 Clos l’Eglise: He called it “a prodigious effort” in those early days, and concluded, in his 96-point review, that it was a “true star of the vintage.”
Now, 12 years on, we’re picking up where he left off, and we’re thrilled to report that this Pomerol star is showing just as well—or even better—than the venerable critic declared.
Showing full depth and maturity without any loss of structural power, you can open it now or hold it for a decade—no matter when you open it, it will provide a stirring experience.
The 2000 growing season in Pomerol was a rollercoaster ride, but the year turned out to be a classic. Wine Enthusiast put the vintage in Pomerol at 96 points and Wine Advocate scored it at 95. Ten years after the vintage, in 2010, Decanter gave it a five-out-of-five rating—and singled out Clos l’Eglise as one of the region’s “Best Producers.”
The Garcin-Cathiard family purchased Clos l’Église in 1997 and upped quality by ripping out underperforming Cabernet Sauvignon vines to focus on the Merlot and Cabernet Franc that thrive on the Right Bank. Most importantly, they hired a Pomerol native by the name of Michel Rolland as their consulting winemaker—yes, THAT Michel Rolland, the Bordeaux legend whose hundred-plus clients and globe-trotting appointments have today earned him the moniker “The Flying Winemaker.”
This wine is in the sweet spot right now. Pull out your finest stemware, give the bottle a few days rest after it arrives, decant it for sediment, and enjoy!
