Aged Super Tuscans Like This Don’t Come Around Often

Il Palagione’s 2004 is a buried treasure—one you’re unlikely to find in Italy, let alone in the US. From a boutique estate on the sun-blanketed hillsides of San Gimignano, grown in an exceptional vintage on ancient soils, and aged an incredible 17 years, it’s everything that makes cellared Super Tuscans so coveted by top restaurants and Italian-wine collectors.

We are extremely fortunate to have found this wine, especially because it comes from one of Tuscany’s great vintages. Vinous raved that the 2004 season produced “exceptional wines at all levels” and called them “reference-point wines for the region.” That was back then. Today, they’re even better, and Il Palagione’s Antajr is a pristine example.

Its foundation is Sangiovese, lending it power and savoriness, while Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon imbue it with structure and elegance. After two years in barrel, and after 14 more in the cellar, the Antajr’s classic dark fruit has gained labyrinthine depths of rose, lavender, tobacco, and truffle. And that’s just the nose. Take a sip and you’ll find yourself navigating dark cocoa passages, adorned by fine-grained tannins.

Age aside, this impressive complexity is why Antajr releases have been called “gorgeous wine” by Vinous founder Antonio Galloni, and why Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate has praised their “concentrated palate, round texture, and significant depth.” To best appreciate the glory of this bottle, we highly recommending opening it with an Ah-so opener to avoid breaking the delicate cork.

Il Palagione’s vineyards occupy 42 acres of historic land in San Gimignano—in the heart of Tuscany—surrounded by olive, walnut, and cherry trees. The farmland dates back to 1594, although the winemaking tradition in San Gimignano is as old as the Etruscan era. Monica Rota and Giorgio Comotti purchased the land in 1996 and immediately began research to determine the vines best-suited for each of the vineyard’s micro-terroirs.

That unwavering dedication and attention to detail have evoked this 2004 Antajr’s intricacy and grace. And a nice, long cellar rest has elevated it to new heights, ones bound to keep your glass off the table as you investigate every twist and fascinating turn this wine has to offer.
