Extraordinary Density and Richness

We taste thousands of wines per year, and sometimes get to taste what we call “history in a bottle.” That’s how we'd categorize this impeccable library wine—the dazzling, 96-point 2005 JONATA La Sangre de Jonata.

From the owners of Screaming Eagle and Michel Rolland winemaking protégé Matt Dees, we're blown away by everything the 2005 La Sangre has to offer... even after 15 years in the cellar. This Rhône-inspired blend boasts the elegant floral aromatics of Côte-Rôtie's finest, plus the expansive depth of best perfect Hermitage. But unlike an iconic bottle with a Northern Rhône label (which could easily set you back $400) this wine vastly overdelivers at $125.

We can't recommend this wine highly enough. Vast aromas of meadow flowers, dried rosemary, charred lamb, and incense spill from the glass before leading into an intense palate with fresh acidity, fine tannins, and full body. This is a perfectly cellared library release that's drinking in its prime, but still has plenty of life left.

Since founding JONATA in 1999, the owners of Screaming Eagle have demonstrated their commitment to the land in Ballard Canyon with as much devotion as they gave to their legendary Oakville estate. From the outset, they spared no expense in evaluating the potential for world-class wines, calling in an A+ team from France to conduct soil samples. After the report was produced, the owner pushed ahead with selecting 80 of the almost 600 acres for the planting of Rhône and Bordeaux varieties. When Matt Dees arrived in 2004 he took one look at the unique potential of JONATA's sandy soil, another look at how much the owners had already poured into their Oakville winery, and signed on the dotted line.

It’s now been over a decade since Dees arrived in Ballard Canyon, and since then 39 of his wines have been awarded 94 points or more by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and two have flirted with perfection earning 98- and 99-100 points—an astonishing feat. Today, we invite you to sample his 96-point masterpiece. Perfectly cellared, all you have to do is uncork and enjoy.
