Beringer Private Reserve’s Esteemed Heritage

Beringer Private Reserve’s Esteemed Heritage

This 95-point 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon hails from Rancho del Oso Vineyard atop Howell Mountain in Napa Valley, and was called the “most interesting and most compelling” of Sbragia's Cabernets by Wine Enthusiast.  The Rancho del Oso vineyard provided impeccable mountain structure to Beringer’s Private Reserve Cabernet for years — a fruit source that winemaker Ed Sbragia (head winemaker at Beringer for 32 years) lauds as “one of my favorite vineyards.” This perfectly aged 11-year-old library wine comes direct from the winery cellar, and is drinking beautifully right now, but has the legs to hold another 3-5 years.

As one of the most revered winemakers in the valley, Ed Sbragia has been described by Robert Parker as having the “Midas touch.” In 2006, Ed and his wife Jane purchased the old Lake Sonoma Winery and formed Sbragia Family Vineyards. He began crafting small-batch Cabernet Sauvignon from a handful of vineyards he’d already been working with, including Rancho del Oso, a site owned by Betty O’Shaughnessy. Located at the top of Howell Mountain, this tiny 6.34-acre vineyard at 1,880-feet in elevation yields grapes that exhibit an “unmistakable intensity,” Sbragia has said.

Sbragia describes the 2006 vintage as “an ideal example of the power and grace [Cabernet Sauvignon] can demonstrate.” We couldn’t agree more. And as an already cellared, perfectly aged beauty, it’s ready to drink now, and will continue to wow until 2022.
