2007 Barolo: Black Magic in La Morra
The 2007 vintage all around the hillside bowl of Barolo was unique. The hot summer helped nurse Nebbiolo to extreme ripeness, accounting for a bevy of big, rich, Burgundian-styled wines that almost belied their Piemontese origin.
In this one-of-a-kind growing season, on the steep hillsides of La Morra, something was witnessed that hadn’t been seen in fifty years. Barolo took on a dark ruby hue, featuring Chambertin-like concentration, still bracketed by all those Piemontese pine needles. Maybe it was black magic, maybe the first inklings of the impact of global warming on the region. But whatever it was, shortly after bottling in 2010, while sipping doppios at the cafe in town, retired winegrowers couldn’t stop talking about one of the extraordinary vintage in decades. Here’s why.
The fruit set was small in La Morra. Rain in early May delayed flowering. After a rainy last week in June, July turned exceedingly dry. But most importantly, despite the drought conditions, summer days were warm and nights cool, a prolonged and dramatic diurnal temperature shift that slowed down the maturation process. Just before harvest, welcomed October showers refreshed the vines. On Barolo’s poorly draining sites, the rain proved challenging, but on these deeper clay-limestone soils, Silvio Grasso’s Nebbiolo comfortably shrugged off the hydric stress.
The 2007 Silvio Grasso Barolo “Turne” remains brilliant ruby in hue, hardly showing a sign of its 4+ years of cellar slumber. Gorgeous aromas of sweet black cherry, raspberry, and plum, tinged with sweet spice and pine needles. Rich, broad, and voluptuous on the attack, still featuring the primary red fruit core that was so enticing upon release, this is an absolute powerhouse from one of the greatest estates in the region, a wine that is drinking beautifully now, but will continue to add weight and complexity over the next 7-10 years.
240 bottles, all drawn directly off the cellar floor in La Morra. $62 on release. $45 this afternoon for a fortunate few. Shipping included on 4.
