The Best Value on the Pauillac Block

Measured in news headlines, 2009 feels like a lifetime ago—maybe two. But uncork the 2009 Château Haut de la Becade and the year that critics hailed as arguably the greatest ever in Bordeaux comes rushing back with an immediacy and majesty that is frankly astonishing.

If you don’t know Haut de la Becade, that’s because it’s an under-the-radar château on a block of GIANTS: Its vineyards are contiguous with SEVEN Grand Cru Classé properties, including Château Lynch-Bages, Pichon Baron, and Pichon Lalande de Comtesse. It sits on top of the highest hill in Pauillac, at the same elevation as nearby Château Mouton Rothschild.

One of the truisms of real estate is that you should look for the cheapest house on the best block. Given Château Haut de la Becade’s neighbors, their 2009 is one of the smartest buys you can make from this hallowed pocket of the aristocratic Haut-Médoc.

The estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc vines are planted to just 17 acres of clay and limestone that have been in the family going back seven generations. Total production is small and gets devoured almost instantly, making this library release all the more covetable.

A barrage of praise greeted the 2009 season from its earliest days. In Vinous, it was “this outstanding vintage, which many experts (though not all) have gone on record as describing as the greatest of all time.” The article was titled “Bordeaux 2009: The Best Ever?”

Château Haut de la Becade’s 2009 lives up to the hype. It is, quite simply, a gorgeous specimen of cellared Pauillac from an epoch-making vintage.
