Last Call Spring Mountain Library Release
The massively concentrated and pliant 96-point Terra Valentine “Marriage” was one of the top-rated estate-bottled Cabernets of that glorious 2009 vintage on Spring Mountain in Napa Valley, and one of Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100: “Few wines in the world can boast this concentration of ripe, flashy fruit.” With total production of just 650 cases, the winery initially released a couple hundred cases, then laid the remainder down for the mailing list and restaurants.
We first discovered Terra Valentine Cabernet Sauvignon while dining at Jean-Georges in New York City. That massively proportioned yet wonderfully pliant Cabernet took us back through the years to the early summer of 2010, and a tasting with winemaker Sam Baxter at the top of Spring Mountain Road.
We spoke of our evening on Central Park West, how much we’d enjoyed the pairing of estate-grown Terra Valentine Cabernet Sauvignon with Chef Vongerichten’s 28-Day Dry-Aged Ribeye. Baxter was grateful and led us through a phenomenal tasting of back vintages.
But far and away the wine of the day was drawn from that superb 2009 vintage on Spring Mountain. The perfectly aged “Marriage” was a Spring Mountain classic, showing off both the ultra-concentrated black-fruit extravagance of the mountain and the wonderfully supple tannins of that mild growing season. That we’ve lucked into another fifteen cases means that we get to share this remarkable wine with more of our Wine Access clients, and we all win.
