Fifth Growth Approaching the Super-Seconds!
Thanks to rockstar winemaker Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy—a highly respected 10-year alum of Opus One—old vines (80% of vines are today 53 years old or older), and careful biodynamic farming, this well-placed Fifth Growth Clerc Milon is now a de facto Third Growth.
Wine Spectator called the 2010 vintage a “modern classic” and the 2010 Clerc Milon displays the character that makes the year so appealing. After a cool, wet start, the vintage kicked into gear in June, with a warm, dry summer offset by cool nights that lasted through August. That combination allowed for spectacular ripeness balanced by fresh acidity and muscular tannins, and a perfectly timed sprinkling of rain before the home stretch allowed for long hang times—and gave the château the chance to pick at the optimal moment.
This bottle is showing beautifully now, but it begs for another decade or more in the cellar, or at least some extended decanting. Either way, this is going to be a centerpiece of any collection and the topic of conversation at any dinner table.
