Margaux Second Growth Hits a High Note

Robert Parker called the 2010 Château Lascombes “probably the greatest Lascombes made to date.” Seven years later, we’re ready to strip away the “probably.” We’ve never tasted a more spectacular edition of Lascombes than this intense, remarkably complex Bordeaux from Margaux’s 99-point vintage.

This wine doesn’t just define the best of Lascombes, but stands tall with the most storied wines of the appellation, and there’s no wiser way to stock your cellar with some perfectly cellared Margaux. Straight from the château, we’ve got it ready to ship to your door.

With aromas of violets, saddle leather, mature tobacco, smoke, clove, and allspice followed by flavors of black cherry, mocha, and exotic spices, this wine is just coming into its own, and its exquisite balance and sturdy backbone hint at a long and rewarding life. Savor it now or cellar it for later—at our price, you can buy three for the price of a big-name Grand Cru, and do a little of both.

Château Lascombes, one of five Second Growths of Margaux, has enjoyed two “Golden Ages.” The first came under Alexis Lichine, the proprietor of Château Prieuré-Lichine, who owned the estate from 1951 to 1971. Then Lascombes fell into underqualified hands, and remained there until it was purchased by an American group in 2000.

Thus began the Lascombes Renaissance. The new owners’ first order of business was to hire a dream team of Bordelaise vintners—Bruno Lemoine of Château Montrose, Alain Raynaud of La Fleur de Gay, and the world-famous enologist Michel Rolland—and give them, as Parker put it, “carte blanche authority to make all the necessary changes in the vineyard and cellars to produce the finest wine possible.” They cut yields by two-thirds, and in 2001 produced what Parker called “undoubtedly the finest Lascombes produced in thirty years.” The 2002 came out. It was better. The ‘03 was even better than that.

This 2010 bottling blends 55% Cabernet, 40% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, and it’s the culmination of a decade-long, spare-no-expense approach that elevated Lascombes to its rightful place. This bottle boasts everything you want in a Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux, at a third of the price of Palmer and a mere tenth of Château Margaux. It’s a slam-dunk for your cellar and our allocation is here, so clear a little space.
