Superstar Michel Rolland’s “Majestic Saint-Émilion”

For truly serious collectors — those who have learned to practice patience before popping 100-point corks — the most extraordinarily age-worthy 2010 was authored by Michel Rolland and Gérard Perse at Château Pavie. Robert Parker penned one of the most effusive 100-point reviews in Wine Advocate history saying: “This wine is truly profound Bordeaux. Everything is in place — remarkable concentration and a beautiful nose of cedar and ripe blackcurrant and blackberry with some kirsch and spice box in the background.”

Perse is a Parisian millionaire and former cyclist who sold two supermarket chains in the 1990s to fund the purchase of Right Bank châteaux. He bought Château Monbousquet in 1993, Château Pavie-Decesse in 1997, and Pavie in 1998. Immediately, Perse brought in work crews to rip out the old equipment, building new temperature-controlled wooden fermentation vats and new cellars. Then he upped the ante, bringing in legendary consultant winemaker Michel Rolland to run the show.

Rolland did as he always does, rigorously reshaping vines, cutting yields from 55 hectoliters per hectare to less than 30 (actually just 25 in 2010!). Severe pruning and green harvesting further pushed the envelope on maturity. Then, true to Rolland cellar protocol, all wines were barrel-fermented, magnifying intensity while making for softer, more voluptuous flavors. In Robert Parker’s retrospective tasting of August 2015, featuring bottles from 1998-2010, four Château Pavie received perfect 100-point scores from The Wine Advocate: 2000, 2005, 2009, and 2010. Of those, Parker deemed the 2010 to be the most age-worthy, arguing that the wine wouldn’t hit its peak — until New Year’s Eve 2099!!!
