Southern Rhône 2010: “One of the greatest vintages in 30 years” — Robert Parker, Jr.

Robert Parker called the 2010 vintage in the southern Rhône “one of the greatest in thirty years.” Weather conditions were ideal, highlighted by chilly nights and marvelously warm days. Absent any of the torrid heat spikes of 2009, the growing season was dry and windy, cleansed by steady breezes. The only downside to the harvest was the impact of shot berries (or what the French call “millerandage”) on yields. Gnarly 80-to-100-year-old Grenache vines barely pushed out 2 tons per acre — nearly 40% less than the norm.

Parker’s and Wine Spectator’s 98-point vintage reports — each the highest in publication history — triggered a selling bonanza of epic proportion. Every bottle carrying the label of the appellation’s brightest stars was allocated months before release. Except one: Guigal.

For years, the Guigals have insisted on delaying the release of their top wines, both the $700/bottle single-vineyard Côte-Rôties and their stupendous old-vine Châteauneuf-du-Papes. Ignoring cash-flow temptation and pressure from importers worldwide, Philippe Guigal did the same in 2010. In May 2015, after 24 months in oak puncheons and two years in bottle, Guigal finally released a small amount of the richest and most age-worthy Châteauneuf-du-Pape in decades.

The 2010 Guigal Châteauneuf-du-Pape is dark ruby in hue. Comprised of a sumptuous blend of 70% old-vine Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre, the aromas alone are well worth the price of admission. Voluptuous aromatically, featuring a mix of ultra-ripe raspberry, black cherry, and black olive, tinged with sweet herbs. Rich, broad, and voluminous on the attack, filled with crushed-red-fruit preserves, at once powerful and somehow beautifully restrained, finishing with excellent penetration and vibrancy. Drink now-2030.

The last 12 cases of our 2010 allocation are now up for grabs. $60 on release. Still $39/bottle today — the best delivered price in America. Shipping included on 4.
