Giovanni Chiappini: The New “Big Boy of Bolgheri”

Giovanni Chiappini: The New “Big Boy of Bolgheri”

The great Super Tuscans have earned their global fame, and it’s not easy for a newcomer to join the ranks of world-class Italian wines. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate hailed the 2010 Giovanni Chiappini "Guado de' Gemoli" Bolgheri Superiore with 95 points, saying it “performed beautifully” in a lineup of the “Big Boys of Bolgheri: Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Guado al Tasso.” Thanks to this 2010, Giovanni Chiappini is now firmly ensconced in the absolute top tier of Super Tuscans — at a fraction of the price of its peers.

In 1968, in the tiny Tuscan coastal hamlet of Bolgheri, the first vintage of the now-legendary Sassicaia sparked an Italian wine revolution that’s evolved into the raging bonfire of today’s Super Tuscan movement. Winemakers have tried their hand at replicating their own Sassicaia, but rarely draw such direct comparisons with the Super Tuscan King as with Giovanni Chiappini’s Guado de’ Gemoli Bolgheri Superiore.

Today, he is assisted in the management of the estate by his two highly capable daughters, Martina and Lisa. While the Chiappinis are exceptional farmers, when consulting enologist Emiliano Falsini came on board, their Super Tuscan soared to the next level. In 2009, Wine Enthusiast awarded it a perfect 100 points — cementing Giovanni Chiappini’s place among the Super Tuscans collectors around the world can’t live without.

The 2010 “Guado de’ Gemoli” is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot sourced from two exceptional vineyards in Bolgheri, Le Grottine and Felciaino, planted four decades and three decades ago, respectively. It was aged 18 months in French barriques, of which only 15% is new.

At 95 points, The Wine Advocate rated this 2010 “Guado de' Gemoli” right behind the iconic Ornellaia (97+) and Sassiciaia (96). If you want one of those more famous Super Tuscans, prepare to shell out at least $200-$250 or more.
