A Rare Napa Library Release

It never fails. For Napa Valley wine lovers who adore icons like Phelps Insignia and Continuum but don’t necessarily want to spend those sums, Miner’s Oracle is our go-to. Made entirely from Stagecoach Vineyard in the eastern hills of Napa Valley, The Oracle always delivers richness and breed in spades, for less than half the price of its peers.

But the 2010 is something else. This is a library release—a wine that was made, aged, and released nearly a decade ago, and has been developing quietly in private cellars ever since. The 2010 vintage in Napa was exceptional: a cool, extended growing season gave the vines more time than usual to build complexity without sacrificing freshness, producing wines of remarkable balance that have aged beautifully. It is widely regarded as one of the finest Napa vintages of the century.

The key to this Oakville stalwart’s flagship red is threefold. It’s had the same winemaker, Phelps alum Gary Brookman, since the inaugural 2001 release. It comes from Stagecoach Vineyard, one of the most coveted hillside sources in Napa Valley—a sprawling estate in the eastern hills, where rocky volcanic soils and dramatic elevation push the vines hard and concentrate everything they produce. And finally, it’s had a painstaking upbringing— 21 months in French oak, then years of bottle age—which ensures the wine is open, generous, and ready the moment it reaches your glass.

Winemaker Gary Brookman earned his stripes at Joseph Phelps Vineyards in the early 1980s. There, he got to know the Valley’s vineyards intimately, and in the cellar his skills grew with each passing harvest. He’s been guiding Miner from the very beginning, and the care he and his team take with this flagship wine will be obvious the moment you take a sip.

The 2010 Oracle is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 14% Merlot, with small additions of Malbec and Petit Verdot. The Cabernet and Cab Franc are seamlessly woven together, giving the wine a gorgeous perfume of black cherry and cassis cut through with a hint of mint—classic Oracle, but with the added depth and dimension that only time in bottle can bring.
