BIG Bottles: Parker's 95+pt Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée "Anonyme"

Stephen Tanzer may have said it best in describing the monumental 2010 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape: “There’s not much to say about 2010 that hasn't been intensely discussed already. It’s almost universally regarded as one of the epic vintages of this generation, with growers comparing it to legendary years like 2005, 1990, 1978 and 1959.”

That epic vintage gave birth to what super-enologist Xavier Vignon called “the greatest wine I’ve ever crafted” — the 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Anonyme. Drawn predominantly from 100+-year-old Grenache vines, the color is deep purple to the rim, the nose infused with explosive aromas of crushed raspberry and dark plum. Terrifically concentrated on the attack, packed with red-fruit preserves, the finished wine measures nearly 16 percent alcohol — but without the slightest hint of overripeness or heat!

In The Wine Advocate’s rave 95+ point review, Robert Parker described “off-the-chart level of extract, lots of glycerin (nearly 16% natural alcohol) and copious black cherry, blueberry, forest floor, lavender and graphite characteristics.” Parker's anticipated maturity? 2015-2035.

But, based on our conversation with M. Vignon, it seems that the winemaker believes that the aging potential of his 2010 “Anonyme” is even more extraordinary than Parker suggests — particularly when the bottles you lay down in your cellar are BIG!
