Winemaker of the Year’s Cellar Release

Serious Bordeaux blends are not meant to be drunk young. Unfortunately, far too many are uncorked before their most generous moments. Today, that’s not an issue. The 2010 Yarra Yering Dry Red Wine No. 1 is perfectly aged, after eight years of cellar slumber, flaunting gorgeous layers of dark berry, seamlessly interwoven with pipe tobacco, leather, and spice. With age, firm tannins have softened to luxurious silk, lingering for miles on the finish. This 2010 Dry Red No. 1 comes highly recommended, with Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarding it 94+ points and Antonio Galloni at Vinous at 94. James Halliday, who knows Aussie wines better than anyone, considers Yarra Yering a 5-star winery, and Sarah Crowe was his 2017 Winemaker of the Year.

Suffice it to say that James Halliday’s 2017 Winemaker of the Year got the memo. Crowe has knocked vintage after vintage of Dry Red Wine No. 1 out of the Park, dry-farming Cabernet, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, then hand-picking at harvest and fermenting only the best berries in the unique “tea chests” common to the Yarra Valley. Even though she loves Cabernet, Crowe makes this wine as a blend because, as Carrodus has told her, “Cabernet needs friends.”

While she has a deep appreciation for the Cabernets of Bordeaux and Napa, Crowe doesn’t seek to emulate them. She makes distinctly terroir-driven wines that speak to the cool-climate Yarra in all of its elegant splendor. The 2010 Dry Red Wine No. 1 has earned high praise from numerous critics. Vinous hailed the 2010 as “Powerful yet lithe,” and “impressively long and spicy, displaying excellent focus and smooth, even tannins.” Following eight years of cellaring, this magnificent wine is now in its prime, and will continue to drink beautifully for years to come.
