2011 Seghesio Barolo … When Piedmont Leans Towards Gevrey-Chambertin

When it comes to floral intensity and aromatic fireworks, Barolo is Italy’s only answer to France’s red Burgundy. Wildly aromatic, mineral, terrifically complex — the best examples age gracefully for decades. Still, despite all the comparisons to Burgundy, rarely do the Piedmontese craft Barolos that are as round, plush, and seductive as Gevrey-Chambertin.

Based on our tasting of over fifty 2011s last month, not since the release of the 2001s have we discovered a vintage where the top estates turned out Barolos that are as richly textured, supple, and voluptuous as the Premier Crus of the Côte de Nuits.

Off of just 4 hectares on the limestone slopes above Monforte D’Alba, Riccardo Seghesio crafted this masterful 2011, one the most darkly concentrated and sumptuous under-$30 Barolos of the last decade. Here’s why.

The 2011 growing season got off to a quick start. Spring was warm, with both flowering and bloom coming nearly a month ahead of the norm. The summer was mild but extremely dry. Riccardo Seghesio’s late-maturing Nebbiolo ripened slowly but steadily until August 15th, when Nature turned on the heat lamp. Temperatures soared to nearly 100 degrees. The combination of intense heat and hydric stress triggered quick accumulation of sugars.

At harvest, the Seghesios reported sugar readings that nearly equaled the ultra-ripe 2007s. Still, skins were fairly thin and seeds were brown, making for that rare Barolo that features dark color, wonderfully floral black-fruit flavors, and soft tannins — a 2011 Barolo that seems more at home in Vosne-Romanée than Monforte D’Alba.

The 2011 Seghesio Barolo is brilliant ruby-purple. Gorgeous floral aromas of black cherry, raspberry, mint, and pine needles. Rich, sappy, and supple on entry, velour-like in texture, filled with a plush mix of crushed red fruits, cherries, and violets, finishing with unusually round, ripe tannins. Drink now for the sheer hedonism of this superb vintage or lay down for a decade, when the aromatic fireworks will begin.
