King of the Super Tuscans
Hailing from one of Italy’s most iconic and coveted Super Tuscan estates, the 2011 Ornellaia Bolgheri set off explosive critical fireworks from nearly every major wine publication in the world. 97 points from Galloni, who revelled over the massive Bordeaux blend that “boasts superb depth, richness and power,” and “is built for the long haul.” Wine Spectator poured on 96 points, declaring it “a terrific young wine in the making.” Wine Advocate and Wine Enthusiast both lined up 94 points for the Tuscan monster, with Robert Parker’s publication raving that the bottle “lives up to the legacy of this important wine, thanks to its extreme intensity and its skillfully crafted bouquet…the results are nothing short of exuberant.”
Famed for its fall-out-of-your-chair voluptuousness, Ornellaia reigns along with Sassicaia, Tignanello, and Solaia as one of the supreme heavyweight Super Tuscans, a pioneering estate that helped make that category as sought-after as vintage bottles of Lafite-Rothschild and Latour.
The key lies in Ornellaia’s unique terroir and climate, which is ideal for for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. In breathtakingly beautiful Bolgheri, winemaker Axel Heinz and his vines enjoy a perfect hybrid of maritime and Mediterranean conditions. Cool offshore breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea sweep across Ornellaia’s rocky foothills, counterbalancing the hot Tuscan sun and creating a priceless microclimate. Year-round, roughly 80 workers tend with remarkable precision to the vines spidering through high-elevation plots rich in well-draining marine soils. In 2011, a sunny, rainless September closed the deal for this blockbuster release that left critics outmatching each other with praise.
