Clos-de-Beze, The legendary Grand Cru vineyard of Burgundy

Clos-de-Beze, The legendary Grand Cru vineyard of Burgundy

Antonio Galloni of Vinous pinned 96 points on this 2012 Domaine Pierre Damoy Chambertin-Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru calling it “rich and voluptuous to the core.” Pierre Damoy is the veritable King of the truly coveted Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru, owning roughly one-third of this of this hallowed acreage. 2012 has been hailed as one of the region’s best vintages in decades. Compared to Rousseau’s 2012 Clos de Beze ($1,200+) and Faiveley’s Les Ouvrees ($800+), the 2012 Domaine Pierre Damoy Clos-de-Bèze is a brilliant buy.

When Damoy took the domaine’s reins from his uncle Jacques in 1992, he was instantly put in charge of roughly 13 acres of Grand Cru Burgundy vines. That’s a lot of pressure. Not only did he handle it, he elevated the domaine to an acclaimed level it hadn’t seen since the 1960s.

While Damoy owns an astonishing one-third of Clos-de-Bèze’s vines, and he sells grapes to other negociants, he keeps the absolute best for himself — and those are what comprise the 2012 Chambertin-Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru. In a vintage as phenomenal as 2012, Damoy’s commitment to using the best grapes results in a near-sacred expression of terroir from one of the world’s most highly desirable regions; one worthy of being called the best of Burgundy.
