    Latour’s Perfectly Cellared Royal Treatment

You could have heard a pin drop when we first tasted this phenomenal 2012 Clos du Roi Grand Cru from Louis Latour—until someone else in the room said what we were all thinking.

    “My god, that is good.”

An exquisite wine from one of our favorite Burgundy producers, the 2012 Clos du Roi’s light bottle-age and estate-direct provenance make this the ultimate Grand Cru in everything but price..

Classified as Grand Cru since 1937, the appellation of Corton’s Clos du Roi has existed since the 15th century, when the King of France stocked his personal cellar with its wines—hence the name "Clos du Roi" (Plot of the King). With a perfect easterly exposure on the famed hill of Corton, these vines have always gotten the royal treatment, from centuries ago through today.

Latour farms the vines on this hallowed slope traditionally, thoroughly pruning them to allow for later harvests and to nurture a ripe fullness in the grapes. In 2012, yields were extremely low, resulting in what Vinous’s Antonio Galloni called “rich, luscious wines with considerable appeal [which] also capture plenty of site-specificity and nuance.”

Clos du Roi is a Grand Cru whose regal sense of place comes through with every sip. Just don’t forget to give yourself a minute to enjoy this ethereal beauty before putting words to what you taste—it’s a special moment you’ll want to savor.
