Experiencing Roagna’s Mastery of “Both Power and Finesse”

We’re honored to share a tiny allocation of their 2012 Roagna Crichet Pajé Barbaresco, an iconic wine produced only in the best vintages. It’s got eight glorious years of cellar age already, and a near-infinite life left ahead.

A minuscule 70 cases were produced in 2012, and the release inspired piles of critical praise, including a 98-point rave from Wine Enthusiast. “The enveloping, delicious palate shows both power and finesse,” they gushed. We adore this bottle for its magical combination of density and lightness, and its unique push-and-pull between tart fruit and savory, earthen undertones.

For over 100 years, Roagna has been producing incredible Nebbiolo, and they command some of the best cru vineyards in Piedmont. The house style remains decidedly old-school, with a reliance on older vines and neutral oak. What result are wines with inimitable nuance—and miles-long waiting lists.

The name “Pajé” is derived from the local Piedmontese dialect and refers to the historic vineyard behind this Barbaresco—a site where the vines are a minimum of sixty years old. “Crichet” means “top of the hill,” and refers to the site’s position in the warmest and sunniest plot of a southwest-facing amphitheater. Composed of marl and limestone, the soils are absolutely perfect for Nebbiolo.

Demand for this bottling grows every year it is produced, and all the bottles come numbered—a sure sign of their scarcity. We’re honored to offer you access to this special wine.
