Channeling Rioja in an Everyday Luxury
In Navarra on Rioja’s eastern border, exciting values are being made by blending indigenous Tempranillo with Cabernet Sauvignon — inspired by the great wines of Vega Sicilia. One of the finest examples we’ve discovered is the 2012 Bodegas Tandem Ars Nova, which Antonio Galloni called “succulent, sappy and penetrating” with a “dark-fruit-driven persistence” in his 91-point review — impressive at this $19.99 price tag.
The Navarra D.O. is situated between Bordeaux and Rioja and overlooks both the Pyrenees and the Atlantic Ocean, a best-kept secret for value. Ars Nova is a classic, easy-drinking Tempranillo/Cabernet blend that hails from the high-elevation Yerri Valley located in the Navarra D.O. The valley is fertile with a cool climate that allows the grapes to slowly ripen and develop pure, complex flavors.
Unico, the top cuvée of the historic house of Vega Sicilia, was Spain’s first great wine, and the blend of Tempranillo and Bordeaux varietals hasn’t changed in the past half-century. Its ripples of influence are still being felt today. Inspired by Vega Sicilia, this 2012 Ars Nova is a discovery we are thrilled to offer Wine Access clients.
