Matt Cline: “Can you burst some more bubbles??”
In late October, Matt Cline sent us the most surprising email of the year. The Clines had just closed on an old-vine parcel Matt had been eyeing for nearly 30 years. While sales had never been stronger, the couple took one look at the size of the 2012 and 2013 harvests, another at their line of credit, and realized they needed a quick cash infusion.
We published a story about the new release of Cline’s Old Vines Field Blend, the highest-rated under-$15 American red in each of the last five vintages. Cline explained what made 2012 so magical on the white sand beachheads of Contra Costa County, and why this lavish 100+ year-old-vine “kitchen sink blend” is the richest and juiciest of the last decade. Priced at a bubble-bursting $13.25, over ONE THOUSAND members took full advantage, lighting up the WineAccess scoreboard like a one-armed bandit in Vegas.
Why revisit past sales history this morning? Because while that sale helped finance both the vineyard purchase and the bumper crops of 2012 and 2013, at year end Three Wine Company had turned a far larger profit than anticipated. On Friday, Matt sent a followup email, this one far more succinct than the first:
“The Taxman cometh. Can you burst some more bubbles?”
What are friends for?
The 2012 Three Old Vines Field Blend is a spectacular blend of 100-year-old-vine Zinfandel, Mataro, Carignan, Alicante, Petit Syrah, and Malvasia Nero. Brilliant purple/black to the edge, with intoxicating primary-fruit aromas of blackberry, mountain blueberry, violets, and graphite. Rich and juicy on the attack, silken in texture, the core bursts with black-fruit intensity — at once plush, round, and suave — finishing with the excellent low-pH vibrancy so typical of these ancient-vine plantings. Drink now for the sheer hedonism of the vintage, or do as we’re doing and lay down this lavish 2012 for 5-7 years.
$23 on release. A tad over HALF-PRICE this morning on the Taxman’s “Bubble-Bursting Warehouse Sale.” Shipping included on 6.
