Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir from Extreme Elevation Site

The 2013 Agnitiō Pinot Noir hails from the Sun Chase Vineyard in Sonoma where vines are rooted at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 1,400 feet — well above the fog line on the western side of Sonoma Mountain — in the middle of the Petaluma Gap.

The who’s who of superstar Pinot producers who source fruit from the extreme coastal site includes Tamber Bey, Wind Gap, Ancillary, Guarachi Family, Patiné, Bevan, and Flanagan. Most of those Sun Chase Pinots fetch between $50 and $80 a bottle, if not higher.

Agnitiō’s inaugural Pinot Noir off Sun Chase Vineyard is a textbook 2013 from Robert Parker’s “greatest vintage in 37 years,” the “Game-Changer.” Dijon clones 667, 777, and 828 were harvested, then whole-cluster fermented in stainless steel in partial Burgundian method, then rested in well-toasted new and used French oak. The results are stunning — see our full tasting note below.

THE LAST 120 cases of this single-vineyard outstanding Pinot are up for grabs. Elsewhere, expect to pay $50-$80 retail for a single-vineyard Sun Chase Pinot half as good.
