James Suckling’s Terrific-Value 92pt Super Tuscan from Bolgheri
When it comes to Super Tuscans, no critic has had more influence than Wine Spectator’s former European bureau chief, James Suckling. Three decades ago, Suckling began carving out the deepest of niches, digging up discoveries with startling regularity and clueing in collectors before the pundits had a chance to blow the horn.
In 2013, true to form, Suckling unearthed a brilliant hidden treasure from the storied coastal region of Bolgheri, home of exceptional — and exceptionally high-priced — Super Tuscans like Sassicaia and Ornellaia.
The 2013 Campo Alla Sughera’s “Adeo,” a lush, voluptuous Cabernet-Merlot blend, took our breath away from the moment it splashed into our oversized Riedel glass. Drawn entirely from the winery’s immaculate 49-acre vineyard, bordered by the Fosso di Bolgheri waterway, the vines are planted to tight spacing, enjoying perfect southern exposure. Soils are a classic mix of clay and limestone, contributing to the richness and vibrant cut of the wine.
The 2013 vintage was extraordinary at Campo Alla Sughera, with cool temperatures allowing late-ripening Bordeaux varieties to reach full maturity even as acids remained firm and tannins sturdy. The call to harvest Merlot came in mid-September, but picking wouldn’t be completed until the last week of the month, when the Cabernet Sauvignon was finally harvested.
Suckling, whose judgment in Super Tuscans is unerring, relished this deep Tuscan beauty, pinning on 92 points and applauding its “polished chewy tannins and bright finish.”
The 2013 Campo Alla Sughera “Adeo” is a gorgeous Tuscan ruby red. Plush aromas of black and red fruits, pomegranate, sweet spice, and vanilla. Soft and pliant on the attack, with a voluptuous core of blackberry and raspberry preserves, showing elegant balance and finishing with surprising sturdiness and tension. Drink now (why not?) or lay down for 3-5 years in a cool cellar.
