The palazzo anchoring the Ciacci Piccolomini property was built back in 1672 by the Bishop of Montalcino. Now, nearly 350 years later, the estate remains one of the most awarded in all of Tuscany, responsible for perennially high-scoring wines that collectors clamor for and that have found places of pride on some of the most prestigious wine lists in the world. And in 2013, Ciacci Piccolomini raised the stakes considerably: Their single-vineyard Vigna di Pianrosso is widely considered to be one of the crown jewels of the entire appellation.
Wine Enthusiast awarded it 98 points, calling it a “dazzling red” with a “stunning, savory palate [that] boasts remarkable finesse combined with an age-worthy structure, offering succulent black cherry, raspberry compote, licorice, and tobacco alongside taut, refined tannins.” Other critics followed in a similar vein, falling over themselves to fully capture its longevity, depth, and balance. Three and a half centuries on, this is an estate at its peak.
