Burgundian Collectors’ Once-in-a-Blue-Moon Buy
Burgundian Collectors’ Once-in-a-Blue-Moon Buy
When one of the biggest importers of Burgundy’s top domaines opted to get out of the business, we took every bottle of the purest White Burgundy from top echelon domaines we could get our hands. This is a once-in-a-blue-moon value for such a superbly crafted White Burgundy and a brilliant exemplar of Mâconnais terroir from Jean-Pierre and Michel Auvigue, fifth-generation winemakers. Their “Le Moulin du Point” offers up “richness and plenty of layers on the palate,” says Master of Wine Jancis Robinson, who pinned on a “Good Value” review, at its full price! The 2013 Domaine Auvigue Saint-Véran “Le Moulin du Pont” comes from the neighboring chalk and limestone hillsides of Davayé, which deliver mouthwatering, citrus-kissed brilliance.
The Chardonnay grapes hail from 35-year-old vines cultivated by one of Saint-Véran’s best growers. The region has become a critical standout of the Mâconnais in recent years, with Vinous declaring that the wines of Saint-Veran “are capable of challenging Pouilly-Fuissé for quality at a much lower price” while Eric Asimov has lauded their “structure and complexity.” Asimov has even selected their Pouilly-Fuissé bottling as his #2 favorite out of a blind tasting of 20 at the New York Times. Situated on steep, high-elevation hills rich in calcareous soils, the vineyards in Saint-Véran yield exquisite white Burgundies prized for their steely acidity and gorgeous fruit expression.
The Auviges are Burgundian traditionalists and vinify each parcel separately. Their Saint-Véran clusters undergo gentle pneumatic pressing before juices are transferred to stainless steel tanks for fermentation and aging, which retain the Chardonnay’s freshness and vibrant fruit purity. Don’t miss out on one of the most irresistible values on white Burgundy you’ll see all year.
