Burgundy at its Prime
It’s no secret that getting access to top Burgundies is becoming harder and harder. Low yields are fueling scarcity, and that’s driving prices to sometimes stratospheric levels. As such, aged cru bottles have turned into impossible-to-find unicorns.
Well, almost impossible. Our wine team knows how to find rare and extraordinary bottles like the 2013 Domaine Darviot-Perrin Les Santenots Premier Cru. A library vintage that’s absolutely gorgeous right now, it’s still got the legs to last another decade in the cellar—if you can keep your hands off it.
2013 was a dramatic vintage. Spring started slow and there were devastating floods in May, but then temperatures warmed up in July and August turned out to be near-perfect. Great bottles from the year would not be easy to find, commented renowned MW Jasper Morris, but the excellent ones that Burgundy lovers could track down would prove thrilling, given a little time.
Didier Darviot learned the trade from his father-in-law, Pierre Perrin, a legendary figure in the winemaking circles of Meursault and Volnay. Domaine Darviot was established in 1989, and sits in the heart of the Côte de Beaune. The grapes for the Les Santenots come from 50-year-old vines in biodynamically farmed vineyards that sit immediately above Clos des Chênes.
A pale-ruby gem with buoyant acidity, a beautifully rounded mouthfeel, and silky tannins, the Les Santenots is drinking beautifully right now, the perfect accompaniment to seared salmon, a tender veal chop, or a hunk of Comté with some dried-cherry compote.
