    Barrel-Fermented, Lees-Aged Meursault Steal

    Barrel-Fermented, Lees-Aged Meursault Steal

A $30 bottle for any white Burgundy from Meursault is a deal. $30 for Domaine Matrot is the definition of a steal, and white Burgundy lovers can thank the shifting nature of the import game for enabling us to offer this 2013 Domaine Matrot Meursault at a Bourgogne Blanc price. Wine Access clients have snapped up every Matrot offer we have sent, so when Matrot’s longtime importer  called — considering the kind of price we could pass on to Wine Access clients — whether to lay claim to every last case was a no-brainer. Domaine Matrot wines have a home on the list at Eleven Madison Park and France’s top restaurants, and this is one serious village wine: Thierry Matrot, who never pulls punches on assessing a vintage, loves his 2013 whites, and this barrel-fermented, lees-aged Chardonnay displays the creamy richness, raciness, and impressive length that exemplify classic Meursault.

In a region full of negociant-producers, the domaine obtained by Joseph Matrot in 1908 has stood out for more than a century as a pioneer of estate bottling. Now his gregarious and exacting grandson Thierry Matrot is well into his fourth decade as the winemaker for the domaine, and has upheld the domaine’s status as one of the most important in Meursault, with wines from his six hectares in Meursault and two hectares of Meursault Premier Cru regularly scoring well into the 90s.

In 2013, challenging summer weather lowered yields in Meursault. But Burgundians awakened to sunny skies in mid-September, and fears of rot were quickly dismissed. The harvest took place under ideal conditions in the first week of October, but despite the strong finish to the season supply stayed low, making this offer from one of Meursault’s most-respected producers even more remarkable.
