A Modern Classic

A Modern Classic

Michelangelo's David, Ferrari, Armani—some things are simply Italian classics. The 2013 release of La Rasina’s signature Brunello di Montalcino is right in the same pocket, cut of a classic, and deserves to be paired with the best Bolognese you’ve ever made.

Adorned with a 96-point rating from Wine Spectator’s former European Bureau Chief, James Suckling, and an under-$50 price tag, the 2013 La Rasina stands out in a sea of great wines, offering, “A wealth of ripe fruit with spice, tobacco, cedar and plum,” and a “ripe and delicious finish.”

Grown from vines planted more than two decades ago on an 111-acre estate, the 2013 was hailed by Robert Parker as offering “power and substance with a good sense of volume and lasting fruit flavors.”

Today, Marco Mantengoli is at the helm of this classic Montalcino estate that was started by his grandfather in the 1970s. Marco embraces state-of-the-art technology in the cellar, achieving Brunello’s trademark elegance with a short 10-day fermentation of destemmed grapes in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The resulting wines are throwbacks in a sense, offering vibrancy, freshness, and elegance.

In a glowing review of the 2013 vintage in Brunello di Montalcino, Wine Enthusiast began, “If you want to experience the energy, elegance and age-worthy structure that first drew wine lovers and collectors to Brunello di Montalcino decades ago, then 2013 is your vintage.” After tasting hundreds of 2013s ourselves, we’re in full agreement. But while many 2013s offer tantalizing aromatics and glowing intensity, few match quality with value like the La Rasina.
