This Is Why We Scour Napa Cellars

We spend an inordinate amount of time spelunking the cellars of Napa Valley.

Wines like the 2013 Marciano Estate Terra Gratia Napa Valley are the reason.

Grown in the prime section of St. Helena—above the Hayne and Beckstoffer Bourn Vineyards, enjoying the same kind of eastern exposure as sites like Dana’s Helms Vineyard, Harlan, and Blankiet—this stellar Cabernet-based blend, now boasting several years of bottle age, has a pedigree that’s so impressive we need to go point by point:

    • Crafted by perennial 100-point legend Andy Erickson
    • Vines planted by David Abreu, who has worked with Screaming Eagle, Harlan, and Colgin, among others
    • One of Napa Valley’s greatest vintages of all time
    • Bottle-age earned in the cool of the winery’s cellars

In 2006, Maurice Marciano, a world-class collector of Bordeaux and Napa Valley wines, took the leap from wine lover to winery owner when he bought one of the most historic properties in St. Helena. The site was first established in 1872 by the Bourn family, after whom the famed Beckstoffer Bourn Vineyard takes its name, and it stands amid some of the greatest vineyard land in California.

The first thing Marciano did was hire a team that could measure up. For winemaker, he tapped Andy Erickson, whose fingerprints are on some of the greatest Napa Valley wines of the last two decades. He also nabbed vineyard manager David Abreu, who replanted the estate with the same care he put into marquee plots for Harlan, Bryant, Araujo, and Grace Family.

This bottle exudes the matchless quality that characterizes the Marciano estate. It has sat untouched in the cellars for nearly a decade, and now it’s having its moment.
