Historical estate that goes back 24 generations

Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435 over 24 generations, the Fonterutoli property is more like a small village, picturesque beyond belief. This wine is the embodiment of 40 years of research across 120 separate blocks and 36 different clones of Sangiovese, of which 18 are unique to Fonterutoli. This wine, comprised of 92% Sangiovese, 4% Colorino, and 4% Malvasia Nera, is a selection of the 50 best lots from the best individual blocks. The wine was matured for 20 months in small French oak barrels, 60% new, and bottled in February 2013 for further maturation.

Wine Spectator’s 95-point review finds “an essence of sweet cherry grounds the surrounding flavours of leather, iron, spice and tobacco in this firm red, which remains vibrant and refined. Bracing acidity and dense, muscular tannins, play out on the long finish. Drink now through 2028.” The Decanter judges’ 95-point review describes a wine “plush, ripe and juicy on the palate with broad fruit flavours, well managed tannins. Great weight of blackberry fruit, well judged spicy oak and a lovely long savoury finish.”

The reviews come as no surprise, as this is a Gran Selezione, the highest tier of Chianti. It’s from Castello di Fonterutoli, one of the great estates of Tuscany. And it’s from 2013, Chianti’s best vintage since 2006. It is understandably one of the finest Chiantis ever made.
