Among the Oakville Elite
The blue-chip estates that dot the steep slopes of Oakville’s “Magic Road” don’t need to call attention to themselves — Dalla Valle, Phelps’ Backus Vineyard, Peter Michael’s Oakville Vineyard (formerly Showket), and David Ramey’s Pedregal. Finally, at 1,400 feet elevation, high above the fog line, sits one of the most prized properties in Napa Valley — the 350-acre Oakville Ranch. In 2013, winemaker Anne Vawter produced her biggest, most age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon ever to come off the rocky terraces of Oakville Ranch. Antonio Galloni called it a “dark, sumptuous beauty” and rated it 94 points.
Robert Parker called 2013 Napa’s “greatest vintage in 37 years,” and nobody was better positioned to take advantage of ideal conditions than Vawter and her legendary viticulturist Phil Coturri. Oakville’s rocky, volcanic soils gave birth to some of the vintage’s most extraordinary wines, most of which have been entirely allocated pre-release, despite eye-popping price tags.
If you haven’t secured a case of top 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons — wines that Parker and Galloni have called some of the most age-worthy Cabs in decades — time is running out.
