Dujac Discipline in Santa Maria Valley
Antonio Galloni likes to call Santa Barbara “one of California’s best-kept secrets.” It's no secret which Pinot Noir-makers blazed the trail there, with Jim Clendenen, Richard Sanford, and Michael Benedict all churning out acclaimed wines and establishing Santa Barbara’s “rich legacy of historic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir sites.” But standing tall among his Pinot Noir peers is the up-and-comer Dieter Cronje.
Dieter was raised just outside of Cape Town, South Africa, and fell in love with wine after tasting a bottle of 1997 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche. His style is very reminiscent of Dujac — they’re made with only native yeasts, high amounts of whole-cluster berries, aged for 18 months in 55% new French oak, and bottled without fining or filtration. Dieter is close with Domaine Dujac owner/winemaker Jeremy Seysses and hired him as a consultant beginning with the 2013 vintage.
In the 2013 vintage, Antonio Galloni gave the Grand Crus of Santa Maria Valley plenty of high praise. Jim Clendenen’s Au Bon Climat, Solomon Hills, Sierra Madre, Foxen, and Tyler Bien Nacido are all singled out as masterful Pinot Noirs “of tension and crystalline purity.”
That purity is on display in the 2013 Presqu’ile Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley, sourced 100% from the winery’s flagship Presqu’ile Vineyard. The vineyard is planted with the clones 777, 667, and 115 — all tracing back to Dujac’s home village of Morey-Saint-Denis. The resulting wine reveals concentrated red-berry flavors balanced by tongue-tingling acidity and a savory finish. Cronje and Seysses began harvest on September 3rd to get a jump on the high-toned elegance of the vintage.
The 2013 Presqu’ile Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir has the textbook dark-ruby Santa Maria color. The nose pops with aromas of black cherry, wild strawberry, and rose petal. Sweet fruit on the palate with deliciously nuanced sweet baking spices. Mouthwatering acidity cuts right through the fruit and finishes with impeccable balance. Drink now to 2025.
